And psychologists are supposed to protect people from emotional distress, not be complicit in their bullying and humiliation. The experts cant have it both ways. They cant participate in a show that thrives on tears and humiliation, and talk about duty of care. They cant allow women to be bullied and degraded and contribute to their empowerment and inspiration. We expect TV executives and producers to push the boundaries. Its what keeps us tuning in. Its what sells advertising space. They offer more drama, more tension, more emotion. But we dont expect psychologists to take part in such a process. I struggle to understand how they can champion a show like Married At First Sight, a show so demeaning to its participants. One can only imagine how the stakes will be raised next series.
